Root Canal Obturation: An Update

The goal of endodontic therapy is the long-term functional retention of teeth with a history of pulpal or periapical pathology. Treatment includes total debridement of the pulpal tissues and shaping of the root canals to develop a fluid-tight seal at the apical foramen. One of the most important steps after canal preparation and disinfection in endodontic therapy is obturation of the root canal system. To ensure an appropriate and acceptable seal, root canal sealers are used in conjunction with the core filling material. This article will review the history of obturation materials used in endodontic therapy and expand on the different materials that have been used in root canal obturation systems.
